“Don't have something nice to say? Go away.”
I home school my two older boys, Liam who is 10 and in the 5th grade, and Bryce who is 7 and in the 1st grade. While they are very different students, they are both very into taking their time and going at their own pace.
I decided to home school when I watched my Liam struggle with sitting still for more than 2 minutes as a 4 year old. When I tried to teach him how to write his name he got very frustrated when he couldn’t do it correctly on the first try. My Husband and I thought he would do better in a one on one situation, and James suggested home schooling him. I was afraid of taking on such a huge responsibility, and wondered if I could actually give him a proper education.
After deciding to do a trial period for his preschool years, I let Liam take the lead. I wanted him to learn in a relaxed and loving environment without judgement or fear of failure. When he was in 1st grade he did something amazing. He read his first book! I was so proud of him in every way imaginable. I also couldn’t help but be a little proud of myself too. We did it together, we learned together. It happened again last year with my Bryce, it’s an amazing event to witness. If I send them to public school then I would miss out on those moments of independence and interests.
I do not home school for religious reasons or because I don’t trust teachers. I just want my children to have an education without being bullied, criticized, rushed, overlooked or judged during their day, without the effects of thirty other boys and girls trying to find their own path in this world. We want our boys to become who they are meant to be on their terms with support all around them.
Are my boys sheltered? Absolutely! Are they happy, healthy, loved and learning all they can? Absolutely!!
Home schooling is awesome! I went to public school through 7th grade and then my mom decided to homeschool my brother and I. We absolutely loved it!
We learned things at home that we would have never learned in school and, personally, I think we learned more about “real life” than we would have if we had gone to public school.
Don’t worry about them being sheltered…I think it is a good thing.
Kudos for taking such a great responsibility and actually enjoying it!
